Well, hello there!

Thanks for stopping by for a moment to learn about who Mother Thorn is and what we have to offer. I’m Valerie, the face behind the roses.

Mother Thorn is a small garden rose farm specializing in romantic, unique, fragrant blooms. Our suburban field is nestled in the quaint hills of Parkville, Missouri, on land where our family roots are deep and meaningful. My passion for roses drives me to bring the best locally grown blooms to the Kansas City area from May through September.

Where our field of roses is situated today, was once an endless bounty of summer vegetables grown year after year by my grandparents. So much love and heart was put into that field, producing armloads of sweet corn, softball size tomatoes, enough green beans to be canned and feed a family for the year ahead, and countless cucumbers and squash. The property is where five generations before me farmed livestock, corn, and hay, where my grandmother was born and raised, and then where she settled with my grandfather to raise their three children — my mother and aunts. And now, my husband, Robert, and I are lucky enough to be the sixth generation to call this place home.

The original summer veggie garden my grandparents kept.

Our connection to this property has provided a lifetime of stories and memories for our family. For me, this is where I would climb high into the trees with my sister, sled the hills with our cousins on snow days, collect tadpoles with grandma after the spring rains filled the deep ravines, and collected blackberries in cutoff milk jugs. I believe in my heart the roses grown here are fed by the love found deep in the earth from the generations before me. I am proud of the way in which this land is blooming with new life.

Mother Thorn is growing (pardon the pun), so be sure to subscribe to the newsletter to stay up to date about all future offerings.

Here's to more roses than thorns,
